Authentic Xi'an Food at Murger Hanhan

Tuesday, 20 October 2020

Murger Hanhan was another of my Instagram discoveries; that seems to be the way with everything I've done more recently, not that I'm complaining because this was a great new find. Not only did the food look totally unfamiliar which was very exciting but they are running a ridiculous £10 deal throughout October (three courses and a drink) so I got Georgia on board asap and we headed to their Mayfair branch for lunch.

The restaurant itself was very cool; dark and intimate of course with an oriental vibe - and well set up for Covid too, there was a mini hand santizer and full length plastic sheet dividers between each table.

The £10 menu gave us the option of two starters, a choice of 25 xi'an noodle dishes and a couple pieces of mochi for dessert - plus any soft drink from the menu.

Georgia went for the veggie starter which were gyozas but as soon as I see something I've heard of on a menu, I'm intrigued. The other option was a murger (or rou jia mo in Mandarin) which they explain as the world's oldest sandwich/hamburger. I can definitely see where that description came from but at the same time, it was so uniquely Asian and just not like a burger at all. The shredded, fatty pork was full of flavour and almost held together like a patty spread was across this strange round bread. It was dense and chewy and just very unfamiliar - but very delicious.

The handmade biang biang noodles were what I was there for and they didn't disappoint. I ordered beef and Georgia went for chicken, which came chopped up but still on the bone - something I got very used to in Southeast Asia but was a bit odd to see in London; it wasn't your typical Chinese restaurant that's for sure. I haven't been to mainland China (just Hong Kong) so I can't be sure but all these new flavours, incomparable to anything I've had before really and a menu full of dishes I'd never heard of, made it feel very authentic. I loved being so unfamiliar.

I wasn't totally sure about the scrambled eggs and soggy tomatoes that were part of my dish, it was all a bit soft and wet but ignoring that, the pac choi, lemongrass and almost.. crumbly meat, along with the intensely flavoursome dribble of sauce at the bottom of the bowl were a perfect addition to the huge hand pulled noodles. They were thick, un-uniformed and had quite a bite to them thanks to the wheat rather than rice, they were made from. Big comfort food vibe.

I love ice cream mochi so I wasn't worried that it was the only option for dessert. Mango and green tea, both vibrantly coloured with a soft, chewy shell, one sweet and one much more understated and a little bit bitter. Both very good.

With a few days of the month left, if you're looking for something different, I'd highly recommend you take advantage of this deal and give Murger Hanhan a try.

birthday week 2020: COVID edition

Friday, 2 October 2020

I have always loved birthdays and as usual, this year I took it as a great excuse for a week long celebration; I wasn't going to let COVID get in the way of that. Since I have absolutely no travel content to share with you at the moment I thought what I'd run down what I got up to during birthday week 2020.

My brother lives in Birmingham so he came home for the weekend and celebrations started with family, on the Sunday prior. My mum insisted that I found somewhere with outdoor seating, that we could drive to, rather than getting on the tube so we headed into Shoreditch, which I was more than happy with. Dishoom ticked both those boxes plus everything there is delicious so it was the perfect choice; we even managed to get an awesome table out on their terrace.

I had had a hankering for a roti for weeks so that was the first thing I ordered, plus a black daahl to dip it in. We had chicken, paneer, fish, two huge legs of lamb and then all the rice and veg as well. Still not content, after a chocolate fondant with a birthday candle, we popped over to Boxpark to pick up some cronuts.

Monday was Grandparents day so a little more understated - we just hit up Wildwood which is just on our local high street; they were also doing Eat Out To Help Out at the time. We skipped dessert and headed back home where a huge surprise cake was waiting for me! Cute. Birthday cake is my favourite.

Tuesday was my actual birthday and I spent most of it with Georgia. I started by opening cards and presents with my parents at home before a quick gym session in Bayswater. Georgia and I live at different ends of the city so when we get together, we usually pick somewhere new to explore. We did brunch at Darcie & May Green in Paddington since not only want it a new area for me but it was also on a super cool, boat on the canal. Seated out on the deck, I had my first shakshuka; Georgia ordered something very green and vegan looking plus they kept bringing us prosecco which was a very nice birthday treat! We were both very drunk and full by the time we left.

We opted for Clapham as our next destination, I think the idea of a long last tube ride was actually what swayed us - we both fell asleep hahah. Soon enough, we were drinking more cocktails, outside in the sunshine at Venn St Records.

Wednesday, we had booked to go to an Italian in Mayfair but heading out early, we popped into Amazonico for drinks and ended up staying for food as well. It's my favourite place so once we realised they had tables, it was an easy decision.

All things considered, I had an awesome and very memorable birthday week!

5 Things To Know Before Your First Time At Taste Of London

Monday, 26 June 2017

Taste of London happens twice a year and as a massive foodie, it's one of those things I have always wanted to go to. I've never had time in the past but now that I do, I couldn't turn down an invitation from Currys. It was the week of the London heatwave so we seriously had the perfect weather for artisan ice cream and drinking champagne on a deck chair. With two VIP tickets, Georgia and I spent the whole day stuffing our faces.

As I had never been before, I didn't really know what to expect. I knew it was a food festival but I didn't understand buying a ticket to go in and then spending more money on food. Now however, I totally get it and would definitely go again. It's an awesome day out; and if you've never been before, I'm hoping that these little tips will make your first visit to taste of London the best it can be!

It's only open for 4 hours at a time
Sometimes my OCD comes in handy. I was adamant we were there for opening and lucky we were because by 4pm they were closing down for the day slot. They open again later on in the evening but there's a no re-entry policy so you have to pay £15 if you want to get back for that. Make the most of your time there because for Georgia and I, after factoring in half and hour champagne break and a 45 minute cooking class, it absolutely flew.

Taste cards don't buy products, just food
Our VIP tickets came with £20 Taste credit which is a great reason to get the more expensive ticket.
These cards can be used to buy dishes which range roughly from £4 - £9, from any of the restaurant stands. Perfect for your time there but there were also lots of stands that were just selling food products to take home - Georgia wants to buy some Pots & Co. & I wanted some cookie dough but neither of the stands took Taste cards as payment so bring cash if you want to buy.

You don't need to spend any money
As I said, we went into to taste with £20 credit card each in our back pockets and.. we came our with the same. We decided to look at every stall before we decided which one the buy from but by the time we had been around the whole festival we were totally stuffed on free samples and couldn't even think about buying a full sized dish.
Make Friends With Stand Holders
Turns out, people are happy to give things away to people they like. Georgia was the perfect person for this because she just talks and talks and makes friends with anyone. Whilst it was pretty annoying when the lady from the cheese asked her 24 questions and she stood and gave an honest, thought out answer for each; Georgia redeemed herself when she made friends with both the Pots & Co (they gave use 4 pots when they weren't aloud to take our cards) and Hippea people who gave us loads of free products, that people next in the line were paying for.

Go Hungry & Try Everything!
Seriously, don't eat before hand; there are so many new and exciting foods to try that you'll be angry with yourself if you even have breakfast. Make the most of the opportunity and try everything that you can! We got to try all sorts of new foods along the way and some were actually really delicious.  We did a cooking class at the end of the day and both of use were a bit too tired but we ended up making my favourite dish of the day and leaving with a new signed cook book that we won!

Have you been to Taste Of London before?
*Huge thanks to Currys for providing me with tickets.

LIFESTYLE: Gilgamesh, Camden

Thursday, 28 January 2016

I've mentioned Gilgamesh on here a couple of times in the past because it has been one of my favourite restaurants the past 4 or 5 years - so when an email popped into my inbox to come along and try the set menu I was more than a little excited!
I first when to Gilgamesh with my family when I was about 18. We were back again the week after and soon enough my parents decided they liked it so much that they booked my brothers Bar Mitzvah there. Since then it has become one of those special occasion places that we love to visit! I thought I'd bring Georgia along with me as its only fair - she has never been before so I thought it would be a nice treat for her too.
At the entrance of Camden market, just before the bridge, the venue itself is unlike any other restaurant in London. You go up a mysterious escalator in the middle of the street to discover a massive space at the top. It has a very beachy sunset vibe with dimmed red lights, palm trees and amazing wooden carving in everything from the bar, to the table and chairs. You could easily forget you're still in London.

We were treated to a pretty amazing table, a large round one that seated the group of seven next to us. From there we had an amazing view of the whole restaurant which for a people watcher like me was absolutely amazing.
As per usual, we started off with a cocktail each - a belini to toast to Georgia starting her new internship and of course they were delicious. We loved the pretty ornate glasses they came in too! While we got through them, we perused the £55 set menu.
I love taking Georgia along on my reviews! Not only is she great company, but it's also a great way to see how well a restaurant deals with a gluten free customer. Let me tell you, Gilgamesh have that one covered. They went above and beyond for her and I was really impressed. She called up beforehand to see how they go about it all and they said if we let them know which main she wanted, they'd make sure not to marinate it so that's what we did! When we arrived though, they sorted out her starters with the sauce separate and her very own gluten free soy sauce as well, I didn't even know that stuff existed.
The food was as good as I remembered. There were a few dishes on the set menu that'd I'd tried before like the duck and watermelon salad and a couple of new ones too. The salad was so refreshing and delicious with chunks of watermelon, shredded hoisin duck, pomegranate seeds and cashews.
We had a bowl of edemame beans which are always a good call for the two of us and the most incredible salmon sashimi, I've never seen such thick, luscious pieces of salmon. It came from a whole separate sushi bar area of the resturant.
And on top of all of that, there were prawn spring rolls which were thin and crispy tubes stuffed with the biggest juiciest giant prawns.
After another cocktail, it was time for the main course! We both went for salmon (Georgias without the sauce) which came with fragrant, fluffy coconut rice and pak choi - all perfectly cooked. We also ordered a side of chinese mushrooms which we were fighting over because they were so good.
Dessert arrived and disappeared within seconds so I don't have any photos - sorry. Georgia went for three scoops of sorbet since she couldn't handle a proper dessert after all that food haha. I had a burnt milk panna cotta which is a dessert I haven't really had before! It came all pretty on a plate with red sauce, berries and bits of ripped up pistachio cake plus a scoop of lime sorbet. The panna cotta was dense and delicious, I really enjoyed it! I was also glad to have the sorbet because it was sharp and cleansing which is just what you need after a big meal.

Obviously, we finished off the evening with another cocktails and a little bit more people watching from our amazing table. We spend a good two and a half hours in there and the time absolutely flew by, we would have happily stayed a few more hours if it wasn't a Thursday and I was on the wrong side of London.

I really do count this place as one of my favourite in London and I definitely recommend you visit if you get a chance!

LIFESTYLE: #LightNightIn With Popchips

Monday, 21 December 2015

Popchips wanted me to have a light night in on them - like I was going to turn that down?! They have two new Limited Edition flavours which they asked me to theme my night around. Sea salt, garlic and rosemary and sea salt, caramelised onion and thyme, both are super light and half the fat.

Georgia met me after work and off we went to Tesco to get all of the essentials, you know - Prosecco, cheese - essentials. Me and Georgia have been best friends for ages and when she isn't traveling across the world and we find time to meet up she takes over from Andrew and does everything for me haha so she took charge of the trolley and wouldn't let me carry any of the heavy bags!
First thing we did once we got back was pour ourselves a drink with Georgia nearly smashing a light with the cork in the the opening process, and she calls herself a professional cocktail maker haha. I left her to get stuck in with the gift hamper that Funkin Cocktails sent me the night before whilst emptied everything out on the counter and tried to work out how we were going to manage to cook a three course meal.
You might have noticed I've been going on about trying a baked Camembert for quite a while now so this was the perfect opportunity to try it flavoured with the Rosemary and Thyme. We had no idea what we were doing so I just stuffed it with herbs and threw it in the oven until it started to bubble.
Once it was ready we all grabbed some baguette and got stuck in.. except Georgia, she went straight in with the spoon haha
There was no way we were finishing it on our own so I called my mum and brothers in to have some. They came in for cheese and ended up staying all night.
For mains went for rosemary and thyme chicken which Georgia did all by herself and was amazing! I have no idea how she knows what she was doing but good job she made so much because everyone wanted some.
While she was working on that I was getting started on dessert. I wanted something salty to represent the crisps so went with salted caramel chocolate brownies of course, was there any other option?! Someone couldn't resist getting involved in that too..
and as the room filled with the smell of hot brownies, no one could wait for them to cool. Taking Georgias lead from earlier, we all grabbed a spoon and ate them hot and gooey from the baking tin.
We spent the rest of the night chatting in the kitchen, finishing off all the crisps and playing with Molly while Reece filled us in on his first three months at uni! Such a fun night! Big thanks to Popchips for initiating it!

LIFESTYLE: Chocolate Week At Fish Market, Liverpool Street

Friday, 16 October 2015

In celebration of Chocolate Week (12-18th October 2015), Fish Market invited us down to try their limited edition chocolate pot designed in collaboration with Doisy & Dom. Like I was going to turn that down especially since not only was it National Chocolate Week but on Wednesday when we went, it was actually National Dessert Day too!
The place itself was tucked away down a side road just outside of Liverpool Street station. I loved that it had outdoor seating with heated lamps too so if it wasnt raining, we definitely would have stayed out there. Inside had a great atmosphere for a wednesday night - it was relaxed and a little bit posh but seemed perfect for everyone - there were men in suits having an after work dinner, couples and lots of girly tables chatting away all enjoying the food!
I took Georgia along with me again and we ended up sharing our whole meal which was nice - not something I'd risk with Andrew haha. To start we ordered a seafood sharing platter and here, I thought I'd give a special mention to our waitress who was so helpful - as soon as we told her that Georgia was gluten free she sorted everything out for us - she arranged our sharing platter to be brought out on two dishes, one being completely gluten free - so whilst I ate half of the goujons and the amazing salt and pepper squid, Georgia got stuck in peeling the king prawns and eating the scallops.
We both wanted seabass for our main so instead of ordering a dish each we decided to order a whole fish and shared it. We got the see the fish before it was cooked and then it came back to us in two massive fillets with the most amazing crispy skin.
And of course we got a couple of side too! Broccoli and mash - I love mash!
But  neither of us managed to finish it so Georgia ended up taking home a doggy bag full of fish for lunch the next day!

After some more wine and a little break, we was presented with what we were actually there for - The Chocolate Pot. It was served in a cute little glass jar with two super thin pieces of sugary, buttery, shortbread on the side which was the perfect accompanyment to the rich, dense chocolate moose. It was super indulgent and the perfect little treat for National Chocolate Week!
Be sure to pop down to Fish Market to try it yourself! But be quick, the dessert will only be served until the  18th.

LIFESTYLE: Pizza Express Autumn Menu 2015

Wednesday, 14 October 2015

Georgia is finally in London. After travelling for the past few years, shes just finished her degree and shes back. I thought I'd better take advantage before she decides to up and leave again so on Friday night we went out for dinner and cocktails in Soho.
She is gluten free and sometimes its hard to find somwhere to go, especially when I dont completely understand it but I knew that Pizza Express were great at working around that so it was the perfect place for us. We went to the one on Greek Street and it was so buzzy with people the whole way though the night! We would know - we ended up staying there for three hours eating, drinking and catching up.
We started with a glass of processo each and a couple of new dishes from the menu. I went for the calamari which I had heard so much about - they are really pushing it on their social media so seeing it in my newsfeed a few times made me really want to try it. They were lovely and not greasy at all which was nice as sometime calamari can be a bit slimy. Georgia went for the mushroom risotto which she said was really good too.
Next up I decided to be difficult and order the new Napoletana  pizza with extra chicken and leggera style (with the midle cut out and replaced with salad) of course it was lovely with big fresh lettuce leaves and juicy tomatoes in the middle and chicken, anchovies, olives and all the stuff I love on the pizza itself.
Georgia is a bit of a cheese addict so she went for the new Formaggi. Now I love toppings on a pizza but that looked delicious overflowing with cheese.
While we waited for dessert we had some more prosecco and a good gossip, the night went so quickly which was mad considering we were there for that long.
For dessert, Georgia went for the good old gluten free brownie with a scoop of raspberry sorbet (which I ate most of haha, I love sorbet at the moment) and I had two scoops of the new gelato flavours Salted Caramel with toffee pieces and Chocolate Brownie with soft brownie pieces. Both delicious!
After another glass of prosecco, we decided it was probably time to make a move although we didnt get far haha we ended up drinking cocktails in the bar next door!
