Going to a gig in a foreign country

Tuesday, 4 February 2020

I've already spent a whole load of time in Thailand but once I found out that Bring Me The Horizon were playing in Bangkok during the dates I wanted to travel, there was no question about the destination of my very last minute holiday! Flying across the world to see my favourite band play live is now something I will always be proud of myself for doing, by myself.

Being in a country where English isn't their Mother Tongue, (that was a bring me the horizon pun guys sorry haha) it wasn't quite so simple; but I wouldn't exactly say it was hard either so I wanted to share my experience for anyone nervous to do the same!

No one in Bangkok center had heard of the venue and a lot of the local taxi drivers refused to even acknowledge me when I asked. Google was also not much help so in the end, I just put the address into Grab and hoped for the best.

We went about half hour out of town but I knew I was in the right place when I spotted a humongous line of people queuing along a road, totally dressed in black. I didn't realise they had such a big Thai following.

The venue itself was awesome. An open air arena; just off of the motorway by the side of a big mall I think. I was just glad that it even existed by the time I got there.

I guess I took it for granted that most of places in Thailand are well catered for English speakers but what I hadn't planned for was the fact that everything was in Thai - I mean I was one of about 5 white people there so it made sense - there was no need for English. I soon realised that if I wanted to know what was going on I was just going to have to ask people - which I did. New found confidence that came with solo travel definitely helped.

This lead me to meet Aida, another girl wandering around alone, also as confused as me - but she was Thai, which was a real help, at least she could understand what was going on. We stuck together for the rest of the night.

I had no idea what was happening when one of the staff ushered us from the back of the very long queue to the ticket pick up point but obviously I wasn't going to stop her. I did have a mini panic when I got to the front of the queue and they asked for ID, which I didn't have but they were happy with a photo of my passport so it was short lived.

We got our tickets and since somehow skipping about a 3000 people in that queue, ran straight up to the front gates of our zone. I was worried about getting stuck in a mosh pit so being right at the front of the zone definitely helped me feel safer - turns out that the Thai crowd are nowhere near as rowdy as Londoners so it wasn't a problem anyway.

For BMTH fans, it wasn't part of the Amo tour so they played a whole load of songs from different albums which was amazing because their new stuff sounds SO different from the older songs. They opened with their new song, Ludens which means I was there for its first live performance. Pretty cool.

Afterwards, Aida and I swapped Instagram's and followed the crowd outside. She took me to the taxi rank and made sure I found a cab before she got a train home which was really sweet.

Getting back to the city center was much easier. After haggling with the driver to less than half of what he wanted, he dropped me off back to Khao San Road and then locked me in the car since I didn't have the right change. Not quite as terrifying as it sounds - he took my 1000 baht note and ran into 711 to get change, smiling and waving at me from the counter.

After giving him some cash, I took the rest of my money for noodles and bubble tea as I walked back to my hostel.

LIFESTYLE: Thai Cooking - Mango And Sticky Rice

Monday, 18 August 2014

When I was invited to take part in a cooking challenge I was super excited as it finally gave me the push I needed to get around to posting something I had been wanting to do since I got back from Thailand!

A new survey carried by International Currency Exchange (ICE) found that majority of people choose their holiday purely based on the food available at the destination. So my challenge was to create my favourite meal that I'd eaten while on holiday.

If you followed my trip to Thailand you will know that I was totally obsessed with a dish they eat out there for breakfast or dessert - hao Niaow Ma Muang - AKA Mango and Sticky Rice. It was totally unlike anything I've ever had before, the whole concept of sugary sweet rice freaked me out and I didn't try it until a few days before the end of the trip after which I became obsessed with it and ate it at every opportunity, I even bought some at the airport on the way home haha. plus to mangos in Thailand are so much sweeter and juicier than the English ones and are sold in bags on the street for like 70p.

So I found a simple recipe, popped down to Tesco's and got started!
  1. Soak 1 cup of rice in 1 cup water for 20-30 minutes, OR up to 4 hours.
  2. Do not drain the rice. Add 1/2 cup more water, plus 1/2 can coconut milk, 1/4 tsp. salt, and 1 Tbsp. brown sugar. Stir well.
  3. Bring to a gentle boil, then partially cover with a lid (or bring to a big boil and have it all spill out of the pan and all over the oven, Like I did). Reduce heat to medium-low.
  4. Simmer for 20 minutes, or until coconut-water has been absorbed by the rice. Turn off heat, leave the pot on the burner with the lid on tight. Allow to sit for 5-10 minutes.
  5. To make the sauce, warm (do not boil) the rest of the can of coconut milk over medium-low heat (5 minutes). Add 3 Tbsp. sugar, stirring to dissolve (I'd use white sugar next time as the brown turned it a nasty colour).
  6. Taste-test sauce for sweetness, adding more sugar if desired.
  7. When ready to serve, prepare the mango by slicing it open and using a melon ball scoop to create mango spheres (I made a right mess of this part haha). Pick up the warm rice in your hands and shape into rectangular or triangular shapes (used a spoon) and add the mango balls (mushy mess) on top.  Drizzle lots of the sweet coconut sauce over.
 Ta-dahhh
It was super hard to find the right ingredients, mangoes were easy but just not as nice, but I had loads of trouble finding the right rice and decided sushi rice would have to do the job, luckily, it did haha!! I was actually really pleased with how it turned out and how similar it actually tasted! I made far too much for myself but my dad came along and finished the rest so it can't have been that bad!

THAILAND: My Molly Rosewolf Neoprene Triangl Bikini on Merlin Beach Resort, Phuket

Tuesday, 5 August 2014

Before I left I showed you guys my bikini collection, now that I have actually worn (most of) them I  wanted to give you a better review. I was able to photograph them on with a relevant background rather than just standing in my room like an idiot haha.

I only actually got a chance to wear three of them since we were so busy sightseeing, but I knew that my Triangl had to be one! Obviously these neoprene bikinis are a huge new craze - it was exciting for me to wear a bikini that wasnt made out of the conventional material! I loved how thick it was!

I usually have issues with bikini tops, I have to buy size 16 for the cups but they have to tie with string so they aren't too loose, (this is also a problem if you cant buy seperate sizes, but luckily with Triangl, you can!) but I was super pleased with this top, I actually had to order a small so that it would fit my back as if a bandau is loose around the back you have no chance of keeping it up haha. Although the cup was a tiny bit small, not that anyone other than me would notice, I think I'm just used to very covering bikinis, it was super supportive and perfect size otherwise. It was so lovely to have a supportive bra but no wires omg so comfortable. It was perfect for all aspects that I wanted, playing around in the sea, sunbathing and jumping on Andrews back while he walked me around in the pool haha.

Since I was wearing such a pretty bikini, I thought why not take my super pretty Zatchel to the beach too - I know its not a conventional beach bag but since it was a private beach was just behind the hotel and I only needed a towel and sunglasses I thought it was the perfect opportunity - it looked amazing sparkling in the sun!

Finished it all off with my new Havianas which have put an end to my years of wearing £1 Primark ones although I didn't wear them for that long, know one in Thailand seems to we shoes that often haha

THAILAND: Tips For Thai Currency, Baht

Monday, 21 July 2014

My recent trip to Thailand was my first holiday without my parents outside of Europe which meant I was in charge of my own money. Euros are easy enough but Baht are completely different. One Baht is currently around 18p which means its around 55 Baht to £1, got it?

I did get to grips with it pretty fast but here a just a few things that I picked up along the way which would have been very helpful to have know before:

Exchange Rates
Whenever I've been away in the past I always got my money sorted in England first, I've never gotten my money changed up in the country itself, so this may be obvious but to me it wasn't haha. The exchange rate is always better from an exchange kiosk rather than the hotel, not that I cared too much while I was away, I normally changed it up in the lobby as it was much easier.

Writing On Notes
Andrew tried to change up a £20 in the hotel but they wouldn't take it because someone had written a number which was partially over the image of the queen. Apparently no where in Thailand will take a note if anything has been drawn over the queen so double check before you leave!

Traveler's Cheques.
I was clueless before leaving. I really was, all I had was the fact that my dad went to Thailand loads when he was younger so I just went with whatever he said. Wrong move haha of course the world has changed in the years from then to now duh, wish I had realised that sooner. My dad told me to get travelers cheques like he did so before my trip I went to the bank and got £500 worth - don't get me wrong, it was all fine but my life would have been just a bit easier if I did what the modern world do and just use a card and an ATM machine. Every time I wanted to change one up it took 10 minutes of filling in forms plus some places didn't take them and the ones that did took a commission. So it's do-able, I'm just not sure I'd do it that way again haha.

A Penny
I started to realise that now and again we were getting 1 or 2 baht less change than we should have been. Obviously that isn't really a problem but it was just strange. I don't know if they have the equivalent to an English penny or maybe they just don't use them. The bill would always come to something like 300.50 or 300.75 but we would only every get a full baht in change, does that make sense haha I don't know,  just thought I'd point it out.

One last thing I had a big of an issue with was getting over excited that I had loads on money when I was holding a 1000 Baht note when in reality I was holding about £20 and getting upset when I had to hand over a 20 Baht note for a bottle of water when in reality, that translates to around 40p. Every now and then I just had to remind myself, this is not England anymore haha relax!

THAILAND: How To Use An Instax Mini 8 Camera

Thursday, 17 July 2014

I'm back from Thailand (cryy) and want to write up so much as I can. I am really one of those people who like to look back on their memories, documented rather than just in my head which is why I love to take photos so much! This little thing takes it one step further and I get an actual paper image, it really was the perfect little souvenir to have at the end of each da y(Huge thanks to Jessops for supplying me with the films!). Now, as much as I love it, it was a little tricky to use and I did take a lot of bad ones in the process but once you get the hang of it, its so much fun!

We took 23 photos and out of that 15 were good! Not great, but not terrible for my first experience with it plus I think if I was actually taking the photos myself they would have been alot better since trying to explain it to Thai people who don't speak English is quite hard haha. So here are a few things we learnt along the way:

Framing

Andrew took both of these and you can tell the difference in his framing. The one on the left was the taken on the first night, the first time he used the camera and its actually great for a first ever shot but the one of the right was taken nearer to the end of the holiday and he really got the hang of it there. Once you get used to the idea that what you see in the viewfinder is not what that photo will look like its alot easier. The perfect framing in the viewfinder always cuts off the bottom so I suggest that you find the frame in your viewfinder, then point it down just a little before shooting!

Exposure

Unlike my SLR, using the right setting on this camera is actually important, I'm so used to using it on Auto (naughty photography student) that I just though the same with this but it really is essential that you change the setting to fit your surroundings each time! It's very easy, and is just a matter of twisting the dial to inside mode, sunny, cloudy or whatever but it makes a huge difference on whether your photos are over or under exposed! Over exposed and everything is white, this actually only happened twice and under exposed and everything is black, this happened alot more often. I found it would happen when quite alot if you the lighting and settings were fine but you were just too far away from the subject. I also found it would happen, if you set it to sunny and stand in the shade, it doesn't work, the sunny setting works best when its sunny and your actually standing in the sun too, was that obvious?!

Distance

I'm still not too sure on this one, I found that most of the time, the photos looked better when you were closer to the camera, the photo below with the beach in the background was the only one with a bit of distance that came out well - it was taken by a woman who spoke English so that may have had something to do with it too.

THAILAND: Our First Day At Merlin Beach Resort, Phuket

Monday, 14 July 2014

So here it is, the most amazing holiday I have ever been on is over so I though I'd share a few snippets with you all! These photos were all taken on our first full day in Phuket. (I'm not sure how in order all these posts are going to be haha, We got to Phuket 5 days into the holiday) We actually arrived the night before in the middle of a storm and we were super sad when we checked the weather and saw that it was meant to be stormy all week. Luckily, it was just a bad day and we woke up the next morning to very bright, hot sunshine and the birds singing in the palm tree over our balcony which was something I loved waking up to! It was crazy, there were coconuts growing on them too! It was definitely alot hotter here than in Bangkok which meant I could wear all the crop tops and shorts that I'd packed!

Motel Rocks - Forever 21 - Havianas
We started the morning by meeting with our holiday rep and booking a couple of amazing things to do while we were there (more to come on that) and then went for breakfast. This was out view. It was amazing!!
We then spent the day walking around and exploring the resort where we came to find that it had a private beach at the back and the most amazing swimming pools ever! We booked ourselves a few treatments in the spa and then straight to the pool!
Remember to keep an eye out for my next Thailand post!
