5 Things To Know Before Your First Time At Taste Of London

Monday, 26 June 2017

Taste of London happens twice a year and as a massive foodie, it's one of those things I have always wanted to go to. I've never had time in the past but now that I do, I couldn't turn down an invitation from Currys. It was the week of the London heatwave so we seriously had the perfect weather for artisan ice cream and drinking champagne on a deck chair. With two VIP tickets, Georgia and I spent the whole day stuffing our faces.

As I had never been before, I didn't really know what to expect. I knew it was a food festival but I didn't understand buying a ticket to go in and then spending more money on food. Now however, I totally get it and would definitely go again. It's an awesome day out; and if you've never been before, I'm hoping that these little tips will make your first visit to taste of London the best it can be!

It's only open for 4 hours at a time
Sometimes my OCD comes in handy. I was adamant we were there for opening and lucky we were because by 4pm they were closing down for the day slot. They open again later on in the evening but there's a no re-entry policy so you have to pay £15 if you want to get back for that. Make the most of your time there because for Georgia and I, after factoring in half and hour champagne break and a 45 minute cooking class, it absolutely flew.

Taste cards don't buy products, just food
Our VIP tickets came with £20 Taste credit which is a great reason to get the more expensive ticket.
These cards can be used to buy dishes which range roughly from £4 - £9, from any of the restaurant stands. Perfect for your time there but there were also lots of stands that were just selling food products to take home - Georgia wants to buy some Pots & Co. & I wanted some cookie dough but neither of the stands took Taste cards as payment so bring cash if you want to buy.

You don't need to spend any money
As I said, we went into to taste with £20 credit card each in our back pockets and.. we came our with the same. We decided to look at every stall before we decided which one the buy from but by the time we had been around the whole festival we were totally stuffed on free samples and couldn't even think about buying a full sized dish.
Make Friends With Stand Holders
Turns out, people are happy to give things away to people they like. Georgia was the perfect person for this because she just talks and talks and makes friends with anyone. Whilst it was pretty annoying when the lady from the cheese asked her 24 questions and she stood and gave an honest, thought out answer for each; Georgia redeemed herself when she made friends with both the Pots & Co (they gave use 4 pots when they weren't aloud to take our cards) and Hippea people who gave us loads of free products, that people next in the line were paying for.

Go Hungry & Try Everything!
Seriously, don't eat before hand; there are so many new and exciting foods to try that you'll be angry with yourself if you even have breakfast. Make the most of the opportunity and try everything that you can! We got to try all sorts of new foods along the way and some were actually really delicious.  We did a cooking class at the end of the day and both of use were a bit too tired but we ended up making my favourite dish of the day and leaving with a new signed cook book that we won!

Have you been to Taste Of London before?
*Huge thanks to Currys for providing me with tickets.

Breakfast at Darwin, Sky Garden, London

Friday, 29 April 2016

In many ways, I am not a typical blogger, I don't wear make up, I don't take my outfit photos in South Kensington and I don't really like macaroons (shh) but when it comes to brunch, I am as cliche as it gets. Although, to be fair, I loved avocados waaay before they were cool - I have been eating them with a spoon straight outta the skin for as long as I can remember!
I am always on the look out for exciting new places to have breakfast around London and this time we had it on the 36th floor. There are so many sky high bars and restaurants popping up all over the place at the moment that it's hard to choose which one to go to, especially with so many charging extortionate prices and sometimes, the food really doesn't live up to its ridiculous price tag that which can be really disappointing. Darwin at The Sky Garden is not one of those places - we had the loveliest breakfast!
For those of you who dont know, Darwin is part of The Sky Garden at the top of the walkie talkie building (aka 20 Fenchurch Street) on the 36th floor. They serve breakfast until 11 and have an incredible view over London.

We arrived at 9.30 and it got busier and busier, it's certainly a popular place for breakfast and I can see why! Everyone seemed so pleased to be there, it was such a lovely experience to walk past for many happy people chatting away together and enjoying their breakfast, I guess if your up and in London at that time in the morning on a Saturday then its because you really want to be there!
We were seated straight away by a very smiley waitress. Something I noticed pop up in one review after another when I checked Tripadvisior beforehand was that all the staff are lovely and I was very pleased to be able to agree with them, you really do notice when staff are good. Apart from that, the place is very bright and airy and the decor is simple, laid back and understated, it kind of had a bit of a Scandinavian vibe which I liked alot.

Also, I wanted to point out that when you go to place like that you want a table with a view and I was so pleased to see how cleverly they had laid it out so that most of the tables for two were by the window meaning that as many people as possible would be able to have the incredible view.
We started with a few drinks whilst we had a little look at the menu. Andrew had a coffee while I had a fresh mint tea which is something I love so much in the morning, super fragrant and refreshing. We also went for a juice each - Andrew went for his usual big glass of orange and I picked something off of the smoothie menu called Pash ‘n’ Shoot which was a mix of passion fruit, pineapple & mango.
I was pretty pleased to see quite a few healthy options available on the menu as well as alot of other choices, although there is no tearing me away from my avocados.

Andrew went for Severn & Wye smoked salmon, scrambled eggs & toasted rye bread (£13.50) and of course, I had smashed Avocado on toast, poached eggs with tomato & chilli salsa (£10.50.) The prices here are very reasonable and we have definitely paid more for breakfasts on ground level! I got a very healthy portion of the green stuff with two perfectly poached eggs which oozed down the mountain of avocado as I cut into them. I also love when it comes with a tart tomato salsa as it cuts perfectly the creamy avo.
Andrew also had a lovely big portion which he really enjoyed as well!
We just wanted to sit there and chat all morning, even when the food was all finished. It had such a lovely atmosphere and was just a really nice place to be - we ended up staying for about an hour and a half - through which time the staff just kept coming back and topping up our water, we didnt feel obligated to order more or rushed at all.
Breakfast was lovely and a combination of all of my favourite things so of course I was going to enjoy something like that! We will definitely be returning and hopefully bringing Andrews parents along next time, We're sure they'll love it too!

*Our breakfast was complimentary in return for this review although all thoughts are 100% my own

#FlavoursOfLisbon with Monarch Airlines

Wednesday, 27 April 2016

I did loads of cooking classes last year and although I did enjoy them, it started to get a bit samey, you know what I mean? Especially when I cant even cook in the first place! But it's been a while since I've done a good old cooking class so when an invitation to a Portuguese one to celebrate Monarch’s new flight path to Lisbon popped into my inbox earlier this week I was ready to give cooking another go and very excited to try something different!
We made pork and clam stew and then Portuguese custard tarts for dessert! Dessert over starters Every. Single. Day.

We chopped and we mixed and we burnt some custard (yes, that was my fault - sorry team) and then we all sat down to eat.
The stew was surprisingly good - I don't usually like pork but it had loads of flavour!
I was in a huge rush to get home so I had to leave before the custard tarts were served but I did get to take one with me which made for a very enjoyable tube journey. It was still hot and so delicious, I've never had one before but I am a real fan now

Wedgewood Afternoon Tea at The Langham

Monday, 25 April 2016

Tea at The Langham
Last month, The Langham launched their new afternoon tea inspired by classic Wedgwood collections, and I went along to have a little preview! I've been to The Langham for tea in the past and let me tell you, its pretty good!
The new tea has been created by Cherish Finden who is Executive Pastry Chef at The Langham London and the loveliest lady! She was there all evening to talk us though how each dessert came to be and you can see from how to talks about each one just how passionate she is about her job.
The tea is super pretty and fun, decorated with flowers and butterflies just in time for spring! We had the perfect evening to go with it, one of those lovely bright, warm evenings in town you know?
For me, usually the sandwiches are my favourite part of afternoon tea but I was so impressed with some of the delicious cakes that I went back for seconds! The sandwiches although, were pretty amazing with a selection of truffled duck egg brioche, Smoked salmon asparagus and rye, Cucumber with cream cheese and chives, Peppered beef pastrami with red Leicester coleslaw and Corn-fed chicken with golden sultana on carrot bread. The truffled egg was the most delicious - it was so decadent.
As for those desserts - They were all lovely but I'm just going to chat to you about my top three! Butterfly Bloom was salted caramel so obvs I was going to love that. A shortbread tower held together with caramel, decorated with white butterflies and the prettiest pattern down the sides.
The macaroon was mini but it packed a punch in the flavour department! Wild strawberry with pistachio cream hidden inside with the print on the front replicating the ‘Wedgwood Wild Strawberry’ design.

I also really loved the ‘Hathaway Rose’ which I thought was just a pretty victoria sponge slice but as I tasted it, I was hit with refreshing lemon in the sponge with a raspberry and lime jam. It was really delicious
Of course there were scones in between and The Langham have that down to a T! The scones here are always good! Cherish has a great team behind her at the Langham and it was great to be able to meet them and give them a round of applause for the amazing food they'd created afterwards!
For the rest of the evening, we were treated to endless plates of food all washed down with champagne - I didnt ever want to leave!

LIFESTYLE: The Häagen-Dazs Little Gardens range

Wednesday, 20 April 2016

Hasnt it just been perfect ice cream weather this week? Yesterday, I bought myself lunch (and a tub of ice cream obvs) and ate it outside in the sunshine. So it is pretty good timing for Häagen-dazs who  have created their first floral-themed flavours, called Little Gardens, sold exclusively in Liberty.

I was invited along to the launch, at Libery nonetheless, where we met head taster for Haagen Dazs and heard about some of the ideas behind the flavours. As a seasoned ice cream eater (I could SO be head taster) I thought it was only fair to give you my opinion of the new flavors.

So let me introduce them: Lychee Raspberry Rose and Apricot Lavender - In the prettiest packaging, designed by a team of botanical artists from Paris, they fit perfectly in with Liberty's vibe. I left the launch with one of each and of course, the another beautiful bunch of Liberty flowers. I love launches at Liberty!
Collectively, I can tell you that both are delicate and floral flavours, which for this seasoned ice cream eater was a whole change. They are very sophisticated, adult flavours where I'm used to the chocolates and caramels of the ice cream world. In keeping with the Häagen-Dazs quality gold standard, both varieties are made from a base of only 4 kitchen-friendly ingredients - fresh cream, real milk, sugar and free-range eggs.
Separately, I didn't really like the Lychee Raspberry Rose, it wasnt terrible, I did love the raspberry swirl but the rose ice cream was just a bit too overpowering for me, when I'm not a huge fan of rose in the first place.
The Apricot Lavender, on the other hand, was light and summery with a thick apricot sauce and real Moroccan apricot pieces. The lavender was there but it wasn't overpowering like the rose, this is an apricot flavour with a touch of lavender, not the other way around.
Available exclusively at Liberty London for £5.95 from April 11th

LIFESTYLE: Easter Eggs

Friday, 25 March 2016

Happy Good Friday everyone! I don't really know what that means but you know, hope you all have a lovely day and have some super plans for the weekend! I'm looking forward for my 5 whole days off, yup I booked Tuesday off too so I could almost pretend that it's an actual holiday, I'm just not planning on  leaving the country. I am, however, planning to relax away from home and to eat alot! I'm pretty excited.

I'm Jewish so Easter was never really a big deal for me growing up, obvs it never had any religious relevance to me but I did always look forward to it because my parents always go overboard with the chocolate. Any excuse for more chocolate in my house. Since I've been abit older though, and had my own money, I seem to have developed a larger than normal love for Easter eggs. People buy them for me, I buy them for myself haha but my dad is the one when it comes to my Easter eggs. A couple of weeks ago, as he does every year, he came back with 16 of them - apparently they were on sale. LOL. But don't think that's it, they were all Nestle, so that's me stocked up on those for the year, now to get a few Cadbury's ones (and yes, I can definitely tell the difference) and maybe a couple more posh ones if I fancy. So far this year, I've already had 6 but I've got a personal best to beat (28 if you were wondering)

I am 100% sure that they taste better than normal chocolate and I have a theory for that! Yes I do. The chocolate of an egg is thin which means, at the right temperature (more on that in  minute) it has an addictive snap to it, that is why I love Easter eggs. The sound and feel of when you snap it in your hands or bite into it. mmmm SO good. Now lets discuss temperatures! Everyone who I have mentioned about the snap too has just assumed that I keep them in the fridge but that is a complete no-go for me. It might make the crack more intense but it completely ruins the flavour of the chocolate, I hate chocolate out of a fridge. I need it to be cold, but not that cold so I've found the best place to leave my Easter eggs in order for them to get that perfect crack and keep their flavour, is in my brother's bedroom because he's away at uni and his room is always cold.

So that is what I think about Easter eggs. Add me on Snapchat (xxgeorgina18) and see how many I manage over the weekend!
P.S Does anyone else use one little pointy piece of chocolate to draw shapes on the rest of it?

LIFESTYLE: How I Celebrated #NationalBreakfastWeek

Thursday, 4 February 2016

So you guys know all about my snack drawer but did you ever wonder what I keep in the other two drawers? Well one if them is quite practical, it has contact lenses, two pairs of spare shoes, an emergency tote bag and all sorts of stuff like that but the bottom one?
That's full of cereal! On a work day, breakfast consists of a cup of cold water, a cup of hot water and a packet of choice with almond milk but with National Breakfast Week last week 24-30 January 2016, I managed to squeeze in a couple of exciting breakfasts too!

Bills

I took Andrew out for breakfast before we went to our hotel last week. He hadn't been to Bills so seeing as there was one of the same road at the hotel, it was the perfect time to visit! I'd never heard of St Martins Courtyard but it was the cutest little space away from the hussle and bussle of Covent Garden. I can find poached eggs in Essex but finding them with avocado is much harder but it's cool, Bills had that covered! Andrew went for his usual salmon and scrambled eggs!

We finished off with a chocolate brownie milkshake and a peppermint tea!

St Martins Lane

Although I only stayed here one night last week, I actually ended up having breakfast here twice. Maybe you remember my first one from this post? Breakfast was included in the stay so we had the whole works brought up to the room. Fruit salad, granola, juice, toast, tea and of course eggs! Andrew had his with bacon and of course I had mine with hollandaise.. oh and spinach.
So that was that, but later in the week, I was back at the hotel for the Barry M press day and they had a lovely continental spread. Look how pretty these platters were?!

Saucer & Spritz

A new Oasis store popped up on Tottenham Court Road recently and I walk past it everyday on my way to work, but this isn't a normal Oasis, it has a hair and nail salon upstairs as well as a cute little restaurant and bar!

Juanita and I popped in for brunch this week and fell in love with the place. Downstairs is a normal shop but upstairs is the cutest little cafe you have ever seen! It had a bit of a kitsch feel to it with mismatched chairs and tables, neon lights and cute little throw pillows but seriously, it was the loveliest place to spend a lunch hour.

As for the food, we are so pleased we have finally found a place nearby that we can get our eggs. Juanita only ever talks about getting her scrambled eggs and I have the same deal with avo and poached so it was really the perfect place for us. We will definitely be back for more.

and yes, we went back two days later and ate the same thing all over again..

How Did You Celebrate?

LIFESTYLE: Order By Emoji at Aloft Excel #AloftTiGi

Monday, 18 January 2016

So I wrote this a liiiiitle bit tipsy on the train home but who cares - we'll stick with it! This event was my first event of the year and what a fun one it was! I started the evening by getting monumentally lost on the tube, which isn't something I do often but the DLR is just so hard to navigate! Anyway, an hour and a half after, I arrived at the Aloft Excel which is conveniently about a 20 second walk from Prince Regent station (I also managed to get lost during that part - take the right, not the left)

The lovely Aloft Excel team met me inside, whisked me off to our private area, and explained the new concept to me - Oder by emoji or #AloftTiGi (text it, get it) which is something they started this January! I swiftly whipped out my phone and text the number with a line of emojis. Next thing I know, a waiter appeared with a plate of food and my drink. I also got a reply which I wasn't expecting, so as the evening went on I got more and more casual about it, ending the night with a casual 'Can I have a belini please?' haha
After playing around with that for a bit, we all sat down for a session with The Biscuiteers - We were going to ice our own emoji biscuits. I got pretty into this with a stripey dress for my dancing girl and deciding that a normal smiley was too boring, I turned it upside down and made it into a bear, all whilst sending the bar one text after another of course.
We finished off the night playing around in the photobooth at the bar and of course using our emojis to order one more drink before I jumped back on the DLR and got lost again haha.
Big thanks to the team who arranged it and made it such a super night for us all! I had a great evening, made some new friends and realised a new skill, I even impressed myself with those stripes!

LIFESTYLE: Dinner At YO! Sushi

Friday, 18 December 2015

I was super excited when YO! Sushi invited me along for a review! I remember my first ever visit when my parents took me for lunch at Bluewater on one of our shopping trips and my love for the place has just grown ever since, I just love watching everything being made freshly in from you me and then grabbing everything I like the look of as it goes around the conveyor belt. It's my favourite place for sushi and I stop off whenever I get a chance!

For our trip, I thought I'd be nice and meet Andrew on his side of London so we visited the St Paul branch. It was quite when we got there but soon filled up with city workers and packed full.
I was clever enough to accidentally book my review on a Monday which was amazing news because YO Sushi do something called Blue Mondays where most of their dishes come on blue plates costing just £2.70. We grabbed a booth and pulled a few dishes off the conveyor belt whilst we decided on what to order.
Luckily, most of our favourite dishes were included in the Blue Monday deal so we stocked up on sashimi and gyozas among other things.
The Sumo bowls have been available from 10th November and neither of us had ever had one before so we weren't really sure what to expect for £8. There was quite a nice selection dishes with a few each of noodle, rice and curry dishes.
Andrew picked the chicken katsu curry which he was very impressed with and actually preferred it over Wagas version which is a big statement. The bowl itself was huge and although I am nothing to go by, telling you that Andrew couldn't finish his is quite a big deal. I had the teriyaki beef, which I would definitely get again because that was also delicious, and huge.

Have You Tried A Sumo Bowl Yet?
