A typical day aboard Cunard's Queen Anne cruise ship

Thursday, 23 January 2025

Less that a year old, Cunard’s Queen Anne has just set off on its maiden world voyage. This was big news in cruise world and only a few days earlier, I was aboard, with my family, for its previous journey to Hamburg and back.

The Queen Anne is one of 10+ ships I’ve been on and even as Cunard’s second largest, it still felt very intimate - carrying only to 2,996 passengers. So, whilst there isn’t a huge amount to do, it was surprisingly easy to keep myself busy.

Here’s what a typical day on board looked like.

We are a family of early risers, so breakfast at 8:30 would typically be the plan. I was sharing a room with my brothers and they often stayed in bed until the last minute which meant I had undisturbed access to the bathroom; a surprisingly spacious one for a cruise cabin. The shower was huge.

We chose to eat breakfast at the restaurant rather than the buffet which meant heading down to to Deck 3 for a more formal dining experience with white tablecloths and waiter service.

Breakfast, like every other meal on board was a multiple course occasion. We all started with the smoked salmon, it’s a die hard Goodman favourite, and it was delicious - served with cream cheese, a slice of lemon & some zingy capers.

I liked to keep breakfast light as I knew how much eating the rest of the day involved. My brothers and dad, however, went all in and ordered second and third courses.

After breakfast, it was time to disembark - we’d arrived in Hamburg today. Getting on and off the ship was as simple as scanning the room card at the exit and stepping off the boat. A shuttle bus then picked us up from the terminal and dropped us in the middle of the city. It was a minimal hard work situation.

Germany in January was cold so we didn’t get a lot done. We wandered around the shops for a while, but after failing to find a cute café to enjoy some German treats, we decided it was just too cold and headed back to the ship for lunch.

I’d planned on having a light lunch, as I was determined not to miss afternoon tea again. However, that plan quickly went out the window when I joined my family at the buffet on Deck 9. I ate a plate of roast pork with mash and vegetables and then a bowl of ice cream. Despite my love for food, I found the constant availability overwhelming, and by this point, I was eating more out of habit than hunger - an aspect of cruising I didn’t enjoy this time.

After lunch, it will come as no surprise that we headed straight down to the tea room - a couple of hours early - to secure a good spot before the next round of eating began.

Afternoon tea was delicious, and this was one meal I truly enjoyed - not just for the food but for the theatre of it all. White gloved waiters served finger sandwiches and miniature desserts from silver platters, followed by freshly baked scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam.

As you can imagine, I was completely delirious afterwards, so I headed straight to the gym for refuge and to try and restore some normality.

The gym on board is small but perfectly functional - and honestly, how often do you get to work out with a view of the ocean right in front of you? Since it was a port day, the gym was pretty empty with most people off exploring, which meant I could get through my workout without any interruptions and was able to hang around afterwards. I find the gym really peaceful and often end up lazing on a yoga mat for half an hour after I’m done, simply enjoying the tranquillity.

I then headed back to the room to have a shower and get ready for dinner. Tonight was a formal night which meant getting dressed up. I wore a black dress and my new heels while my brothers both put on a suit jacket and tie. During the formal nights, there are photographers set up all around the ship taking photos so on our way to meet my parents for dinner, we stopped for a photo.

This evening’s dinner was the best one we had on our four day voyage. The veal that my dad and I both ordered was nice, but nothing special so as we watched everyone else go on about their beef wellington, we decided to order ourselves a second main course to share; and they were right, it was a standout dish.

For dessert, I was stuck again between the brownie and the pineapple so I just ordered them both, it seems such a normal thing to do on a cruise ship. The brownie again, was unremarkable but the rum roasted pineapple, was I think, my favourite dish of the whole cruise.

After dinner, we wandered into one of the big lounges and found a table with some nice chairs around it. Not that I needed to eat any more, my mum ordered the hot chocolate she had been telling me about for the last three days, which arrived in a teapot enough for two so I shared that with her. It came with three accompanying plates of chocolate shards, whipped cream and marshmallows.

As we were enjoying our drinks, my brother pulled out two packs of cards and told us about one of his favourite games by which everyone had to guess the rules as you go. A very confusing concept at first but we enjoyed it so much that we were up playing it, in that lounge until 2 am; before heading back to the cabin and swiftly falling asleep. I always sleep very well on a cruise ship!

Are cruise ships for old people?

Tuesday, 15 October 2019

Having just got back from sailing the med on a Royal Caribbean cruise, I thought sharing my average day on board could be an interesting topic. It seems fairly obvious that most people think you have to be over the age of 60 to book all inclusive cruises but from my experience, that usually isn't the case.

I won't lie, this last cruise, it absolutely was the case and it wasn't ideal. But, that doesn't mean there's nothing for young people to do on cruise ships. The Independence of the Seas has all sorts of fun stuff for younger people from an ice rink to an arcade and even a newly added escape room.

It's very easy to laze around on a sunbed all day if that's what you enjoy; the buffet is just next door to the swimming pool and the soft serve ice cream machine but that isn't our style and our days were packed full from beginning to end.

Breakfast

From a huge buffet on the top deck to a served breakfast in the main dining room, like all of our meals on board, there were lots of options. I did get up for food for the first few days, but soon discovered it was the easiest time for me to skip a meal (you'll understand why by the end of this post) so my day usually started by meeting my parents after they had had breakfast at around 9.30am.

Explore on Land

Arguably, the best part of a cruise holiday is that you wake up in a new place almost every day. We did a 12 night Spanish Mediterranean tour which consisted of 8 stops and 4 days at sea so when we were docked, we got up early and went to explore. Sea days were the perfect excuse for a lay in.
There were some awesome stops, surprisingly, a few that we hadn't been to before but my two highlights were Lisbon; we hired a lady in a tuk tuk to show us around before stopping off for a whole load of pastel de natas, and Ibiza where we climbed to the top of the island to look over the ocean before climbing back down to the habour for a well deserved paella.

The good thing about it being accessible for the older generation is that everything is super easy. The ship docks, you walk off the gangway and then you're ready to go! You can join a coach tour and get picked up from there or go off and do whatever you fancy.

Lunch

Only a small part of our day was spent on shore, we usually got bored after a couple of hours and couldn't wait to get back on the ship to eat some more.

Activity

After lunch was my favourite part of the day and usually when we'd find ways to entertain ourselves on board. Sometimes I'd head to the gym but I'd usually save that for windy days at sea; so on sunny days at port my brothers and I would head to the top deck to go on the Flowrider.

On this particular day, I went straight from the gym and with lack of preparation, jumped on in my sports bra and shorts. Definitely recommend a sturdy top and I have had some flyaway bikini tops in the past!
After that, it was time to grab my headphones; and sometimes a frozen cocktail, and find somewhere cosy to curl up for the rest of the afternoon.

Get Glam

Time to head back to the room to get ready for the evening! To my mum's despair, most nights I went for dinner super casual in a sweater and shorts. There were 3 formal nights on our voyage and although we didn't get to fancy for those, I did step it up from the loungewear. Some people get really dressed up in floor length ball gowns and suits!

Dinner

The buffet was open but we would always go to the main restaurant which was spread across three floors and this was where our eating got totally out of hand.

On one of the first nights, my brother couldn't decide which starter to order so our waitress said she'd just bring him both. From then on, we got into the habit of ordering any dish that sounded good which meant while everyone around us was having a normal three course dinner, we would have anywhere between 4 and 7 courses turn up for each of us. Think NY steaks, lobster tails, lamb shanks and duck breast mains, it was all very rich and decadent!

Drinks & Show

By this point, the ship had set sail again and the internet connection was gone for the night. We did struggle but it was a good thing because it meant we didn't spend all our time glued to phones. Buying onboard wifi was extortionate so we only did that on days at sea.

My dad liked to go and watch the show after dinner and if it sounded good, we'd go with him. Otherwise it was a matter of grabbing a cocktail and chilling at one of the many bars around the ship for an hour or so.

Games

Back together after that, we usually spent the rest of the evenings playing cards and drinking cocktail after cocktail in the sports bar.
Failing that, I took the odd night to go back to the room early and watch Netflix in bed!

Check Your Pet For Parasites

Monday, 19 June 2017

So I know this post isn't as relevant to my blog as it was last year (when I was much more lifestyle) but my babesiosis posts got so much traffic that I figured people must be finding them useful.

Molly turns 5 this year and I honestly can’t tell you how much she has changed our life. She cheers everyone up and brings us all together; and she’s always there at the door to greet me, whether I've just popped to the shops or I'm just arriving home from the airport in the middle of the night. She is a huge part of our life, and so a pet should be!

Although I love her like mad, with my anxiety I really worry about her. Did I shut the front door properly? She hasn't been to the toilet yet! Why has she been sleeping so much today?! All sorts of crazy things run through my head when it comes to her, I can imagine this is what having a child is like.
Check pet parasites
Check pet parasite
Whilst I sit and pick twigs and leaves out of her fur after a walk, one thing that I don't often think about is what parasites she could be picking up on her walks.

A survey of over 1000 dog owners nationwide carried out by  Pet Parasite Action  has found that while 85% of us happily hug our dogs (we don't leave her alone more like), most dog owners are unaware of which parasites present the greatest danger to their pet or their family.

So please just take this as a little reminder from me: Remember to get your pet checked over by a vet every once in a while and ask them about a simple way to help protect your pet against parasites inside and out.

LIFESTYLE: I Remember.. My Favourite Family Memory

Wednesday, 30 March 2016

A few weeks back, Red Letter Days got in touch and asked me to recall my favourite shared moment with your parents. I had a long hard think but there was one particular holiday, over 15 years ago that kept popping back into my mind. They asked me to write a short paragraph for them to include in their blog post here (link to come asap), but I thought it might be nice to pad it out over here with a bit of a longer post! This post could get VERY long as it was a 5/6 week holiday so I think I'm just going to try to cut it down to specific little things that I remember.

If I tell you that I remember most details about a holiday that I went on when I was 8, then you've gotta assume that it was a pretty special holiday right? Let me set the scene, it was the summer of 2002, the year after 9/11 and my mum had decided she wasn't going to get on a plane again so my parents had to come up with something a little bit outside of the box for the 5 of us (I have two younger brothers). Basically, we drove to Southampton, got a week long cruise over to NYC, drove to Florida, stayed there for two weeks, and then did the same thing to get back home. It was a pretty incredible holiday and one of my top two ever (only competing with my trip to Thailand.)

Cruises were like nothing we had ever seen before (we've been on one every year since) and this wasn't just another Royal Caribbean cruise, our first trips were were Cunard and they were like the big old ships you see in the films, white gloved afternoon tea, a chocolate on your bed each night, people wore ball gowns to dinner (of course I remember all things food related). When we arrived in America, and my parents took advantage of the three days we had in New York and of course we visited Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty. I also remember being super excited about actually eating chinese from one of those paper pots and the huge ferris wheel inside the giant toys are us.
We spent the next three days driving down to Florida. What do I remember about those days? I remember the big car my dad rented, I remember the hotels we stopped over at on the way and I also remember that there had been a shooting in America that week and that my mum wouldn't let us go to the outdoor pool in case someone shot us.

From Florida, I remember the Disney parks but not too well as there were so many of them - I would love to go back to Disney World! I remember going to IHOP for pancakes and all of the delicious crab and lobster shacks around. I remember my brother getting stung by a hornet while we were playing in the pool and I remember making a house with my brothers in the huge walk-in wardrobe at the villa we were staying in - seriously, look how american it looks!
Two weeks later, it was the same back to NYC and back on the cruise! I remember how we were all super excited (my parents included) when we had the same room attendant on the cruise coming back, we all loved Arnold.
Sorry for all the super blurry family snaps but I just couldn't help myself when my dad found the old album in the garage.

I hope you enjoyed my little trip down memory lane, Check out the other bloggers stories over on the RLD blog!

LIFESTYLE: My Christmas And New Year 2015

Monday, 4 January 2016

I'm super sad to say it but I'm back at work and Christmas has come and gone so in this post, I just wanted to share a few photos of what I got up to over Christmas and New Year! On Christmas Day, we opened all of our presents together around the tree before getting ready to go out for lunch with my grandparents. We spent the whole afternoon chatting, laughing and eating, the food was absolutely endless. Afterwards everyone came back to ours for, yes, more food and board games.

Next day I did the same thing all over again at Andrews house with Christmas lunch and more presents. We made the most of the rest of the holidays by eating far too much with fun plans, dinner reservations and different things going on every single day, lots of prosecco and cocktails (Dirty Martinis Dirty Grinch wins by a mile) as well as making sure I ate chocolate for breakfast each and every day! (See my Christmas stash below)

Happy New Year Everyone!

LIFESTYLE: Mothers Day Flowers

Tuesday, 25 March 2014

Flowers are always a perfect little extra gift to give your mum on mothers day and I was delighted when The Great British Florist offered to send me a bunch for my mum!

They sent us a pretty pink and cream bunch, perfect pastel colours for this time of year and I love that they are all sorts of shapes and sizes. They arrived in perfect condition and were ready to give to my mum as soon as they did! They were wrapped up beautifully and tied with a shabby chic brown string and tag (which was plain on the back so you can write a cute little message on it!)

How cute is this little story they had on their mother day page about why we give flowers?!

"When young girls and boys were in service - think Downton Abbey - were allowed one day to visit their family - and this day was usually Mothering Sunday. The tradition of sending flowers came from this, as often they were allowed to take flowers from the conservatory or the garden as a gift."

LIFESTYLE: Mothers Day With H Samuel

Wednesday, 12 March 2014

With Mothers day coming up,  H.Samuel challenged me to make a crafty little gift for my Mum, they sent me some paint and some glitter and some other bits and pieces for me to make her something a little more sentimental. It was such a cute idea and a great chance to get messy and creative - something that I don't do enough and although it was like kids play, I really got into it and had a lot of fun, and I ended up with something super cute!
They have also offered me a £50 gift card to give away to my readers so if your stuck for gift ideas (or money) Why not enter and you could treat your mum to something on them!
